About NALBOH

 The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH)

The National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) informs, guides, and serves as the national voice for boards of health. In today’s public health system, the leadership role of boards of health makes them an essential link between public health services and a healthy community. Uniquely positioned to deliver technical expertise in governance and leadership, board development, health priorities, and public health policy, NALBOH strives to strengthen good governance where public health begins—at the local level.

The mission of NALBOH is to strengthen and improve public health governance.

NALBOH’s Vision

The vision of NALBOH is boards of health that are:
  • Appointed as a result of a well-informed selection process.
  • Comprised of individuals who have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively represent and serve.
  • Well-connected to other stakeholders in public health and government.
  • Effectively and competently serving the public health needs of their community in accordance with the core functions and essential public health services.
  • Aware of NALBOH’s resources and actively engaged in its success.

Goals

Based on the evaluation of services, NALBOH’s focus over the next planning period is to:

·         Develop sustainable operations.

·         Provide resources and support for boards of health to practice their governance functions.

·         Increase board of health membership and participation in their state and national association.

Key Strategies

The board identified a number of resources and skills available to the Association to advance its goals.  These strategies will be considered when developing and executing to give the best opportunity possible for success.  The key strategies include:

·         Leverage member expertise, connections and volunteerism to support NALBOH.

·         Work in partnership with other organizations to promote NALBOH, advance the six functions of governance, and provide expertise to our members.

·         Support the development of state networks to help promote NALBOH and engage members at both a national and state level.

·         Utilize available technologies to provide value and service to members at lower cost and higher value.

·         Review and update the bylaws and policy manual to document direction and operations.
