Health Justice for People Experiencing Homelessness: Confronting the U.S. Public Sanitation and Hygiene Crisis

Outbreaks of the hepatitis A virus (HAV) among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) illuminate systemic failures to address their health needs, including sanitation and hygiene, and show the practical population health effects of poverty. This issue brief examines the connection between HAV and barriers to essential public toilet, handwashing, shower and laundry services for PEH; provides a menu of legal and policy opportunities to advance access; and offers examples of promising community efforts.
