Hello, InALBOH/NALBOH members!

I’m back from Raleigh, NC, and the NALBOH Annual Conference. What a great time seeing Board of Health (BOH) members from around the country, networking, sharing challenges and successes, and learning. Set your sights on Denver, CO, Aug 14-16, in 2019. The mile-high city will be our destination and our time together. This year’s conference saw a significant increase in attendance which has added to the national momentum NALBOH has experienced recently.

As at past conferences, I learn the most from those breakout sessions that focus on BOH Governance and how Boards can improve. In particular, I learn much about conducting an effective BOH meeting and setting powerful agendas that focus on the future of the LHD. Board development was emphasized. Deliberately recommending BOH candidates based on skills and experience will advance the work of the BOH and the LHD.

In the state association meeting I represented Indiana and gave an update on public health happenings in Hoosierland. It is always interesting to learn what other states are facing. I’ve found this helpful when thinking about our PH challenges here. We certainly can learn from one  another. Capacity building was discussed in that many strong state associations will make for a more vibrant NALBOH. We, in Indiana, are challenged to increase our BOH association numbers, coalesce into a unified player when it comes to PH issues in our state and to sustain the improvements achieved.  We have our work cut out for us! I’ll address specific breakout sessions in future reports.

The last InALBOH webinar (July 26) on Harmful Algal Blooms is archived on the NALBOH website or by clicking here. The Hulman Public Health Awards event will be held October 25 in Indianapolis. Visit the IPHA website for details.  I will attend and hope to see many of you there. Have any of you participated in the Alliance for a Healthier Indiana Road Show in your area? If you have a story to tell about your experience, please let the rest of us know.  You can email me and I’ll get the message out. Also, I’ll be attending the ISDH Fall Leadership Symposium on October 10 and the Indiana Public Health Conference on October 11. These are great opportunities to learn and to network with PH colleagues around the state. As schools start back, the days grow shorter and the air gets cooler, autumn will be a busy time. Let’s stay connected! Use the Indiana page at to post a message and to read and respond to other messages. Hope to see some of you soon at one of  the upcoming events.
