Incoming President's Message from Christina Dokter

We begin this exciting year with renewed interest in public health governance.  We welcomed three new Board of Directors: Sharon Stanley, Michael McLaughlin and Andrew Quarnstrom.  They received a pre-recorded online orientation about the 6 functions of governance, the website, the strategic plan for 2018, membership targets for 2018, webinars, and of course, the annual conference.

Certainly we are in challenging times, and such times call for uncommon ways of thinking about problem solving.  I am challenging the NALBOH Board of Directors to become a learning organization that engages in complex adaptive thinking and leadership.  We will be working within committees fashioned in a matrix pattern.  Learning within teams is part of adaptive behavior.   I trust that many of you in your local Board of Health are also learning and preparing to protect the health of communities before problems occur.

We have the following committees and chairs for 2018:

  • Bylaws Committee: Judy Sartucci
  • Conference Planning Committee: Barbara Ann Hughes
  • Education Committee: Sharon Stanley
  • Emeritus Committee: Ron Burger
  • Executive Committee: Christina Dokter
  • Finance Committee: John Novak
  • Long-term Planning Committee: Margaret Brink
  • Nominating Committee: Barbara Ann Hughes
  • State Leaders/State Association for Local Boards of Health: Meghan Swain

We anticipate seeing many of you at the annual conference in Raleigh, NC, August 8-10, 2018. I look forward to being your 2018 President!

NALBOH State Leadership Committee - Get Involved and Represent your State!

SALBOH (State Association of Local Boards of Health)'s have long-time been a core component of NALBOH and it's membership. A committee of SALBOH's had been formed many years ago to continue to provide a forum for dialogue among state associations, identify and recommend resources for state associations, and help develop new state associations. NALBOH recognizes that not all states have an organized SALBOH, and would like to continue to invite further representation from other states. Please check out the State Leadership roster with most recent representation, and consider joining us as a representative to further boards of health activity in your state and at the national level! All states are welcome! The State Leadership committee meets on the 4th Monday bimonthly by Conference call. Please contact the NALBOH Office or Meghan Swain, Chair, if you are interested in hearing more information.

  • Factors the law requires to show proof of an abuse of discretion
  • Tools to assist public health decision making (the recent prosecutions of health officials for the Legionella outbreak in Flint, Michigan will serve as an example)
